What The Dentists Want Parents To Do

That is exactly what a dentist’s rule book would look like when they had been, to be honest.

I have been a dentist for more than twenty-five years, treating adults and kids of all ages.  As a mom, I like taking care of our patients!  When kids have difficulties during a dental clinic, oftentimes it is because of something the parents have accidentally done (or not done).  That is unfortunate, especially since it’s so avoidable.

Rule #1: Ask the dental office about how to best prepare your child for what to expect at the dental visit.  Children are extremely perceptive and will sense your unhealthy vibes if you’re fearful.  Your dental office will have suggestions and perhaps even some age-appropriate reading material you may use.

Rule #2: Schedule the visit for some time when your child is not tired.  A healthy snack before the consultation is also a good idea.  Children who are tired and hungry will probably be less cooperative.  As a practicing dentist, in addition to a mother, I have a fridge with healthy snacks and beverages in my room for only such a need!

Rule #3: If you tend to be squeamish, do not return into the treatment area.  I will come out to the reception area and provide updates to parents that opt to remain there.  It’s no surprise to admit you can’t handle watching a health or dental operation.  Believe it or not, I have had to pull a child from the dental chair to get his dad before he fainted, to lie down!

Rule #4: Do not speak about bad dental experiences in front of your child!  Modern dentistry is a lot different than when you’re a child.  Don’t pass your anxieties!

Rule #5: Never use “the dentist” as a hazard.  I’ve had parents endanger their children to collaborate or else they’d make me give a snapshot, although you might find this hard to believe!  I’ve had parents tell children if they don’t brush their teeth that I was likely to hurt them.  Am I to establish a rapport with your kid if he hears comments such as that from you?
